This 2014 total renovation of a 1951 brick ranch, which was typical of LaVista Park’s beginnings, builds both within and out from the original foundation footprint and roof structure. Architect Robert M. Cain paid tribute to the original ranch style while bringing the house into the 21st century with geothermal heating and cooling, energy-recovery ventilation, and maximum site permeability for ground absorption of rainwater. The original oak flooring was reused, but the home was updated with quartz counter-tops, a steel roof, and a quartz ethanol-burning fireplace. Sited on a 2/3-acre lot, the house backs up to old-growth forest, with the downslope extensively hardscaped and planted by Lyle Collins of Southern Trillium. To take advantage of the woodland view, the southern exposure of the house is entirely glazed, and the east and west walls, which are near adjacent homes, are finished in true stucco or translucent glass block for privacy. Built as a home for aging in place by the long-time (1984) owners, the house is on one level, with wide doorways, a roll-in shower, and bright but energy-efficient lighting.

1002 CITADEL DRIVE

An art lover’s paradise, this home is decorated to highlight the owner’s collection. A mix of mid-century modern and traditional furniture set against bold colors and custom wallpaper serve as the backdrop for abstract expressionist artwork including a variety of early and mid-20th century American and French pieces. 1002 Citadel was recently featured in an eight-page spread in Modern Luxury Atlanta Interiors where both the aesthetic value and ease of living in this well thought space are highlighted. Soaring 16-foot ceilings in the main living area ensure the minimalistic kitchen and great room feel comfortable yet generously sized. The masculine but cocoon like master suite includes a morning kitchen, Japanese bidet toilet, and a shower large enough to hold a small family. The recent creation of a year-round outdoor living and recreation areas complete with Palm Springs accents finishes the space, enabling seamless indoor/outdoor living. This home was completed in 2017 by Bryan Craig Homes in collaboration with architect Eric Rawlings. Interior Design by Kate Hayes Design.

1126 BEECH HAVEN ROAD

This striking Mid-Century Modern was built by Epic Development in 2010. The gallery entrance leads to the main level that contains the master suite, library, main living area and 2 guest bedrooms, each with a private bath. The open Floor plan living room and chef’s kitchen and master suite open on to a 450 square foot screened-in porch with its own fireplace. Unique features of this home include curved accent walls, wall insets art displays, and built-in bookcases. The current owners purchased the home in 2017 and embarked on expanded landscaping efforts in the front and back yards, adding water features, stone retaining walls and new plantings, and wood trim on the interior. The owners have used the woodworking shop in the third bay of the garage to do many of the interior and exterior wood finishes themselves.
