UPDATE on Proposed Bike Paths for LaVista Park AND a small note on traffic calming!!

Last week, Councilman John Funny held a Zoom meeting with about 40 members our neighborhood, on the city’s “Multi-Modal” plans for parts of Brookhaven. Those plans, as we have discovered very late in the process, included the addition of possible bike paths on Sheridan, Citadel and Beech Haven Roads.

The meeting was energetic at times.

Neighbors had concerns about additional signs that could end up appearing in front of homes, there were concerns about speed bumps that would need to be removed, and concerns from health professionals who live in the neighborhood that, based on the way our roads are used, this could lead to tragic consequences involving cyclists, e-bike users and motorists. While there were at least two neighbors who welcomed the plans, the large majority who spoke and who have written in are strongly against these changes. There were also concerns about other plans that would require the city to engage in legal fights with certain homeowners for property access.

Councilman Funny has heard our neighbors, and reports that we have now been removed from these plans, which go in front of the city council for a vote this coming week. We join about five other neighborhoods that have asked to be removed, for similar reasons.

Those other neighborhoods, however, were involved in the process much earlier – an issue we’re working with Brookhaven to prevent from happening to us again.

Traffic calming.

One of the issues raised over and over again at the emergency listening session with our city councilman was speeding on streets in LaVista Park. As a result, Councilman Funny has asked the city to install TWO digital speed signs/radar machines on Sheridan Road, to deter some of these speeders who are racing in between speed bumps. These will be -temporary- and installed by the week of Sept 4th. We’ve also alerted our neighborhood patrol, who thanks to Brookhaven, can write traffic tickets. However, we need to warn residents that the officers tell us that a decent number of these speeding violations are going to people who live right here in the neighborhood. So please slow down!

Finally, we will be pulling signs for non-renewals soon. We have a number of residents who think they have renewed but haven’t. Happens all the time, people forget!! Please check and renew now if you haven’t.

We are fortunate in that we’ve had a new member join the board to help keep us on track and schedule, but still need two more volunteers for open positions!

The City of Brookhaven has proposed a comprehensive “multi-modal” plan that will be voted on August 27th.

Neighbors,
Apologies to many of you who are just learning of this, even though plans are about a year in the making. Some of this was discussed at the last in-person quarterly meeting. But many of you will find this a significant issue that needs more sunlight.
WHAT’S HAPPENING:On August 27th, the Brookhaven City Council is voting on what they’re calling a comprehensive “mutli-modal” plan that currently includes this neighborhood. Putting it simply, this is a large project that would install E-Bike, scooters and bicycle lanes across the city. So far, about four neighborhoods, with various safety, security, traffic and property rights concerns, have removed themselves from these plans.
Even though there are plans for our neighborhood, for some reason the LVPCA was not identified as a “stakeholder” –  which is why we weren’t interviewed for the study that led to this. This is why we are late today.
HOW THIS COULD AFFECT YOU:Currently plans are for marked bikeways in front of all homes on Citadel, Beech Haven, and Sheridan Road. Some people support this, and we invite you to join this important zoom. For others, there are concerns the roads are crowded enough. And one of the greatest concerns are new road signs – a number of homeowners will see -new or additional road signs- in front of their properties.

REMINDER: PLEASE RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY. SIGNS WILL BE PULLED SOON. : )

GREAT NEWS FOR OUR PARK😀🍂🌾: Thanks to volunteers, including park coordinator Bill Dynan, we’ve worked with Councilman Funny to get up to $100,000 dollars in 2024 for improvements to the park! This gives our park a “master plan” for renovation and improvement, and was approved at a recent city council meeting!

More details from Bill: “One of the major issues is mitigation of flooding and drainage in the lower park. Potentially, the unsightly drainage structure could be replaced and the flood-plain re-vegetated with water-tolerant species. Other needs may include repair, expansion or replacement of the handicap-accessible viewing platform along Wild Creek Trail, installation of a walking trail and/or bridges along the creek, addressing erosion along the trail in the upper park, landscaping the entrance monuments, improvements to the picnic area by the playground, and consideration of subdued lighting to improve nighttime safety.”

Thank you to the hard-working volunteer neighbors on the LVPCA board, to Bill and our group, Friends of The Park, who recently planted 500 daffodil bulbs on November 12th! 💐🌷🌞🌳

The Brookhaven Blast survey is available here: https://hks-citiescommunities.typeform.com/BuHiNodes

North Druid Hills Corridor Scoping Survey.

DeKalb County is identifying opportunities to transform the North Druid Hills Road corridor from a congested, auto-oriented street to a multimodal friendly complete street supporting the diverse uses along the corridor. The purpose of the scoping study is to identify transportation infrastructure projects which meet community goals and objectives, that are then presented to state and regional partners for programming and funding partnerships.
