Area News

GREAT NEWS FOR OUR PARKπŸ˜€πŸ‚πŸŒΎ: Thanks to volunteers, including park coordinator Bill Dynan, we’ve worked with Councilman Funny to get up to $100,000 dollars in 2024 for improvements to the park! This gives our park a “master plan” for renovation and improvement, and was approved at a recent city council meeting!

More details from Bill: “One of the major issues is mitigation of flooding and drainage in the lower park. Potentially, the unsightly drainage structure could be replaced and the flood-plain re-vegetated with water-tolerant species. Other needs may include repair, expansion or replacement of the handicap-accessible viewing platform along Wild Creek Trail, installation of a walking trail and/or bridges along the creek, addressing erosion along the trail in the upper park, landscaping the entrance monuments, improvements to the picnic area by the playground, and consideration of subdued lighting to improve nighttime safety.”

Thank you to the hard-working volunteer neighbors on the LVPCA board, to Bill and our group, Friends of The Park, who recently planted 500 daffodil bulbs on November 12th! πŸ’πŸŒ·πŸŒžπŸŒ³

I-85 at State Route (SR) 42/North Druid Hills Road Project Update

This is to provide you with an update regarding work at the I-85 at State Route (SR) 42/North Druid Hills Road project.

(Weather permitting) Beginning the week of Feb. 5, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will mobilize equipment and begin preliminary structure work at the State Route 42/North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek. Drivers can expect nightly construction lane closures next month, while the contractor, North Tarrant Infrastructure, completes required activities ahead of a planned 90-day full bridge closure.

Georgia DOT will confirm the exact extended closure and detour start date as soon as available.

This full roadway closure between Buford Highway and W. Druid Hills Drive is anticipated in March and will expedite reconstruction of the current bridge built in 1962. During the three-month period, motorists will utilize the provided five-mile detour route. Drivers will still have open access from the Interstate 85 interchange (Exit 89) and properties adjacent to the bridge work zone during this time.

The posted detour route will follow I-85 northbound to Exit 91, SR 155/Clairmont Road, and then turn onto SR 13/Buford Highway. This detour is approximately five miles long. (Please see attached detour map).

We will continue to post updated information on our project webpage: I-85 at State Route 42 North Druid Hills Road – 0016054 (arcgis.com).

North Druid Hills Corridor Scoping Survey.

DeKalb County is identifying opportunities to transform the North Druid Hills Road corridor from a congested, auto-oriented street to a multimodal friendly complete street supporting the diverse uses along the corridor. The purpose of the scoping study is to identify transportation infrastructure projects which meet community goals and objectives, that are then presented to state and regional partners for programming and funding partnerships.
